Left-wing groups like to take over subreddits by moving in and downvoting anyone who disagrees with them. When they succeed, they make the subreddit worthless. When they fail, they look laughable but they can still be a serious annoyance.
The voting system of Reddit comes from an assumption that people would mostly be fair in evaluating posts and comments, whether they agreed with them or not. It was a different time.
