I would argue that to some extent resize filters reflect more what developers were expecting things to look like than just using pixel multipliers.

I'll admit some go too far though. HQx filters are too sharp, go too far at "creating shapes" etc. My preference is something with a bit more of a balance -- not too sharp, but not too fuzzy. 2xSaI was my favorite.
