taxation may actually be the only thing left that directly connects government spending to the will of the American people.

imagine what happens when income taxes are abolished but it's still a full blown fiat system. now government spending has zero accountability. now one cannot claim "my tax money" and therefore x, y, and z.

obviously not an argument for income taxes but just a thought.
