Alternate timeline where telegraph packet switches get invented early enough to prevent voice telephony from taking off due to the cost of the operators and later the large mechanical switches. Everyone has teletypes in their home that print on paper tape. The messages are called instagrams because you don't have to wait for an operator and delivery person.
