#EngenderedWriting 16 — Have you written a gender-bending role model story?
Looking back on my career, it seems that I mostly write gender-bending role models. My Reluctance SF series is different, subtly. Case in point:
A woman (Thorn Rose) is selected to be a crystalmariner (read: astronaut), but it's to be expected in a society in which the reader learns women and men have different gender roles, and different gender expectations, than they are used to. A man (Streak Carryaton) is also selected for the mission. It apparently got a lot of pushback since 1) he's male, 2) she knew him from childhood, and 3) certainly someone else (read: a woman) could be trained to do what he does so well.
She's the mission commander. He, incidentally, loves Thorn.
There are many approaches to storytelling.
