Somewhere beneath this stretch of the Clyde to the west of Glasgow, a monster lurked waiting to prey on unsuspecting shipping. This was the Elderslie Rock, a band of incredibly hard stone across the river sitting just eight feet below the surface. This wasn't a problem until efforts to make the Clyde navigable all the way up to Glasgow began in the 1790s.
