The same crap is done with Android UI elements, with just as little practical utility.
"Refreshing" the UI is a totally pointless exercise, and I rather think it is a euphemism for "justifying our budget by making useless changes." It is certainly a net negative in terms of actual usability.
Look at the QWERTY keyboard; it's an intentionally inefficient layout, but we're all used to it, and every attempt to "refresh" it has had niche success at most. Its familiarity outweighs its inefficiency.
