My folks didn’t encourage me, I just wondered what it tastes like and they let me have a sip, over the years I’ve done this thrice, once with wine mixed with Ginger Ale, and over the last year beer and Jack with Coke (that one’s the worse, was drinking a glass of plain Coke and it was so much better)
