Originally, country music was homegrown folk tunes sung by backwoods farmers. Some of it was music brought over from the "home country" which evolved over the years. Other parts are sung prayer. They put the twang on it when they recorded it for sale.

(He starts with that and goes all the way through a country bar in the Valley becoming The Thing in the 1990's. At the time, I couldn't figure out why so many people I knew were suddenly into Lyle Lovett. My mom watched Hee Haw, so I avoid country bars.)
