Like so many things I publicly revile, I have a secret attraction to Joshua Reynolds. Love him and/or hate him, he literally started the Academy, and set the standards by which everything since must necessarily compare. He's classist, nationalistic, chauvinist, facile, and factory-made (the textiles were painted in by the shop staff). And we still define ourselves by comparison and contrast to him today.
