They made all these choices in vacuums, I think. "Yes let's make it more like an RPG, people were annoyed that our weird mechanics weren't RPG enough!" and such. But they didn't seem to put together how that looked in aggregate, or if they did, it was too late to do anything about it on their dev timeline.
because bits ARE good. The air-glide armor set, incredibly cool, has extremely neat highly visible ways of finding it. That's the model they could have used (make all the climbing armor on highly visible cliffs marked with a particular climbing rope or whatever), but they just. Did not. I'd guess due to time constraints, because wowzers that would take a ton more time to execute.
