Thanks to everyone who replied to this. My sense from the replies is that you don't want an overwhelmingly detailed alt text, but something that gives the gist, which is already in the main text of the message. However, you might not agree with my gist, so you also want a link to an accessible version of the data. This doesn't quite give the same experience to visually impaired people though because you can often just look at the graph and make your own interpretation that might differ from the authors, and I don't really see any way to replicate this experience. Providing the data seems like the closest you can get but it's obviously a lot more work to understand a table than a plot. Are there other alternatives?
