When I was a kid, a very reliable way of making a bit of side income around my hometown was collecting bottles. You'd walk around the streets, lurking for improperly disposed bottles, ideally bear bottles that were called Cheburashka, and picking them into a bag. Then you would bring them home, wash and dry. The bottles had to be shining clean (no leftover glue) and pristine (no cracks). It is hard to find the exact details, but it seems one empty bottle would cost about $0.02. That was enough to buy Turbo chewing gum. Ten bottles would give you a small loaf of bread or a highly desirable and non-recyclable plastic bottle of Sprite. Apparently, collecting bottles was common for decades in the late USSR and early post-USSR.
