Stock Pixel OS uses a fancier Google app for this part of it but they still use AOSP DocumentsUI elsewhere. The app is still being improved in AOSP and will be getting better over time. We could change some things about it ourselves but we're working on replacing or overhauling the no longer developed AOSP apps first: Clock. Contacts, Phone, Messaging, Keyboard, etc. DocumentsUI is developed but they don't use the Files activity.
