This is also why Asimov hyped Star Trek, writing at least four articles praising it for TV Guide. Anything that grew the audience for the genre was good for him. Roddenberry promoted Star Trek through science fiction fandom and Star Trek in turn promoted science fiction to the wide, wide world.
Mainstream audiences ain't what they used to be.
Isaac Asimov was thrilled when Star Wars became a massive hit because it meant everyone was gonna make a lot more money, and science fiction fans were thrilled because it meant we were going to get a lot more big budget movies. The glorious releases of 1982 were the fulfillment of that dream.
