Once again I'm struck by the use of imperial measurements in fiction. The main markets for English fiction are UK and North America, both using imperial. But the author I'm reading, Colin Barrett, is a young Irish guy. When he has his young character talking about walking 7 miles it makes him sound inauthentic. It's like both author and character are trying to make themselves understood by an old person
