One thing that is completely unsustainable now, and moving forward, is funding for public transportation in U.S. cities.
In 2019 the T, greater Boston’s public transit system, said it needed 10 billion dollars just to address fixes alone, not to mention any expansion, electrification, speed/frequency upgrades, etc.
Jump to today and they just shared that number is actually $24.5 billion just to fix things. Btw, their approved budget this year is $2.7 billion. Where’s the other 22 billion going to come from?
Imagine how many other systemic crises the U.S. is facing - infrastructure, education, healthcare, etc…
As for the MBTA in Boston, their plan is to get more funding from “federal funds and borrowing money”…when the federal deficit is well over 33 trillion and growing astronomically.
