Practically the first thing I did when I became a faculty member was to join the union. Some scientists don't because they believe their work is of inherent, indisputable value. Look at what the current political leadership is saying about science now and see if you still think that.
It's not too late to join the union. Unions can say and do things that Universities can't. And you're legally protected from retaliation when you work on things together with the union.
