When people see a group they make observations about said group based on what they observe from constituents of said group. Most people are also aware that exceptions to trends and patterns among any given group, but exceptions do not constitute a negation of the broader trends and patterns as is. I suspect though, that you want to obfuscate any idea of there being a group writ large because you similarly observe these trends and know how poorly they reflect on the group that you are a part of and don't want that association to fall back on you.
