Hmm. So my 1st reading should be the main one, but maybe there is some intentional irony/foreshadowing here? I.e. that perhaps Richard himself is not so happy about the events (IIRC, he then proceeds to stir up trouble -- Richard III being seen generally as a villain).

Not the play I'm most familiar with (that'd probably be "King Lear" or perhaps "Midsummer Night's Dream").

But I like the modernized movie version with Ian McKellan (1995).
