That shared TV experience you describe was relatively short lived. Very few in the UK had TVs until the 70s. But the small village I rode my bike to (from 1957), to catch the bus to school, had 7 pubs in 1/2 a mile! There was a shared culture there, as also in the "6 o'clock swill" In Australia! Now that street still has one pub, I guess the need to socialise that way has greatly diminished. Everything changes. We lose, we regret, we win too!
