I moved to Texas in 1993 and lived there in 1995 when George W. Bush became its governor (replacing the smart and charismatic Ann Richards) and signed a law (based on Florida's) to vet, train, and license Texans to carry concealed handguns, claiming (in May 1995) "This is a bill to make Texas a safer place."

At the time, I shaped my employer's policy on guns and signage. (The signs would essentially be "Visitors, check your guns at the front desk.")

In 2008 and 2009, there were shootouts in front of my house (only about 100 yards beyond Austin's city limit).

I left Texas at the end of 2009.

Texas started allowing licensed open carry in 2016. In 2021, Texas started allowing effectively anyone age 21+ to carry a loaded gun in public--without any vetting, training, or licensing.

Two friends I made in Texas have been shot dead--one in Colorado and one in Wyoming.
