The Laacher See in Southwest #Germany is the only active #volcano in Europe north of the Alps. It typically erupted every 5,000 to 10,000 years, with the last eruption 13,000 years ago being larger than the Pinatubo eruption and greatly dwarfing the Mount St. Helens eruption.
There's still carbon dioxide bubbling up in the lake and occasional earthquakes as recent as 2019, meaning it's still active.
I had no idea, and as a German this seems really weird.
