Relays forward messages/notes from one user to another. Instead of a central server storing everyone’s posts, relays can be distributed across the globe and run by anyone. In fact you can set one up yourself eventually and connect to it so that if you are censored on other relays you can still share over yours and ask others to use your relay to see messages.
Eventually there will be relays that aggregate contents from many relays and you can just add one of those or a couple of those.
