Matrix is just kinda a trashy protocol and Synapse is garbage. Element is extremely bloated. Using it just feels cluggy and slow even if it's the most "polished" UI/UX-wise (encryption keys withstanding). It's definitely the most intuitive for those coming from Discord.
I find XMPP so much nicer. It's like all the best aspects of IRC and Matrix put together. Super fast, encrypted, and was very easy to setup. Very extensive, too and an open protocol standard vs. being maintained or curated by a centralized authority or group.
