Henry Fonda and Madeleine Carroll in Blockade (1938). Set during the Spanish Civil War, the movie tried to warn of the fascist threat developing in the world. However, instead of being brave and bold, the movie did so in timid fashion. Fearing a flop, the publicity department reported that Franco had banned Blockade in Spain. He hadn’t. However, when word reached Franco that he had banned the movie, he did.
