**INTERNET AND CLASS**

"It's quite interesting seeing people talk about elitism where they believe the 'elites' have the ability to push more changes in comparison to the masses. Some of you may know about the elite theory which claims that power of nation-states is within a small concentration of elites. Yet with the rise of the internet does this theory face a major rethinking? In a world where we are able to communicate in seconds from one place to another, much of the behaviors between the upper classes and lower classes have changed where they are almost converging. For example, what is really the difference between a middle class person and an upper class person in the current era we live in. Without mentioning the wealth differences, what other real differences are there? In the pre-modern era, 'elites' tended to be very literate whilst the masses weren't much so. Not only was there a difference between the lower classes and upper classes in terms of the ability of writing and reading. Even in terms of speech where the masses tended to use informal words whilst the upper class tended to use formal words. Now some might claim this convergence of speech more associated with the introduction of mass literacy to the masses via state education. Whilst this might be the case, I think the internet has accelerated the convergence of speech between the two classes as now a poor man residing in 'india' is able to communicate directly to someone living in the british palace via twitter or other forms of social media. Now this might sound insignificant as that person is probably going to ignore that person but communicating both directly and frequently to someone like that...there are not a lot of events that bear similarities to those events that occurred during the medieval period. Now that the language of the upper classes and the language of the lower classes have already started to converge, it becomes quite probable that the masses are not only able to influence the 'elites' but also the other masses where the rise of podcasts and youtube has given the masses access to communicate with other masses. Now let me give you 3 examples which have changed the media discourse in recent years: the gaming community, the redpill community and the incel community. In all of these communities they consist of social rejects within the masses itself and yet now no-one denies the influence that these communities now have over the masses of today. Now some have been captured by the 'elites' (gaming community), some are somewhat in a middle-ground (the redpil community) whilst others are rejected by the 'elites' (incel community). Now you might be wondering how the the incel community has influenced language of the masses. Have you heard of the words, 'moids' and 'foids'? Whilst in this article I'm not focusing the influence these communities have on the masses, it is notable that some communities that consist of social rejects are able to influence the media discourse today that the 'elites' of today have not been able to do in recent years. Now some might mention elon musk changing the algorithm where it promoted stories about the 'grooming gangs' but yet it's undeniable that this happened after the backlash he received from nationalists. In other words what he did happened after he interacted with the some of the masses associated with the nationalists."
