Re: birthdays, this year what I'm trying to do for the ones I don't automatically remember is to add the date to each Google contact (hadn't paid attention to this feature before) whenever Facebook notifies me that the day has come up. I know Calendar then creates a Birthdays calendar from those, and I presume there's a way to use that to generate reminders!
