#HappyBirthday to Callixte Lavallée, the celebrated Canadian composer, born 1842 in Verchères, Canada East. A pioneer in music both in Canada & the U.S., Lavallée was best known for composing the music for “O Canada” in 1880, which officially became our anthem 100 years later. He also fought for the Union Army in the American Civil War and publicly called for Canada to be annexed by the United States. Awkward.
