There are many things where you can see this play out:
Eat healthy and workout now, or live the "easy" life and sufferer monumentally more medical problems later.
Nurture your children and teach them morals through example and coaching so that they'll want to take care of you in old age, or dump them in daycare and public schools for them to dump you in a nursing home later.
Live on the edge of your income, never saving and have no recourse when a true emergency hits, or have some savings for the unexpected so you can roll with the punches.
Trust in the fiat system and watch the walls close in, the fire rise higher, and become a slave to the state because you trusted their paper...
