I never get much range outta those $25 Baofengs. I have three just coz they work on one side of town fine but I can never hit a repeater with them.
The $150 rigs I've borrowed work fine on the repeaters and can reach the next not-really-line-of-site town (Petaluma to Cotati) ok.
You can do long-distance low-baud rate comm on Meshtastic devices, yes?
Since I'm on a lake there are various public places to hide Meshtastic- might be fun to play with.
