My college had a cadre of older closeted very stereotypically gay men who administered the institution's conservative interests with Machiavellian zeal. We young BGLT referred to them derisively as "The Drones." The older I get, the more I examine the "gay villain" trope, the more I wonder if it's a case of chicken-or-egg. Because there are major historical precedents, and some are breathtaking. Take Francesco Alidosi: Violent times, violent means, gay as a goose, historically unlovable.
