We had bear encounters every trip (and I still have them so often I feel like a bear magnet). We never kept food, toothpaste, soap or deodorant in our tent. After a very large aggressive bear visited our camp at night I started brewing huge pots of herbal tea for us then had my kids urinate all around our campsite. It worked. We made noise while hiking and that worked, too.
