I've said it before and I'll say it again: just like EVs exist to save the car industry, hydrogen exists to save the fossil fuel industry. But even Shell doesn't seem to be particularly interested.
Which is not to say that hydrogen isn't interesting. Quite the contrary. Green hydrogen can be extremely useful. It's just that there are significant challenges that need to be overcome when it comes to storing and transporting hydrogen. Right now the best way to use it is on-site, whether for energy storage or for some chemical process.
The water-gas shift reaction is bidirectional, which means you can use hydrogen and carbon dioxide for any chemical process that previously started with coal or methane. You still need a source of CO2, but unlike hydrogen CO2 is easy to store and transport. The liquid is not even a cryogen; it liquifies at room temperature at 55 atmospheres. The main issue is that unlike methane and ethane and like propane it's heavier than air, making pipeline leaks potentially more dangerous than LNG pipelines.
