The resulting product is worse and the behind-the-scenes cost is actually higher, but these costs aren't as easily quantifiable and are too abstract for short-sighted managers and investors to care.

It's like how for the last several decades, products have been produced more cheaply by cutting corners on materials and labor costs, and quality has gone downhill as a result. You can quantify the cost savings in a single number on a spreadsheet, but you can't as easily quantify the loss in quality and its impact on buyers and the environment. And so, buyers and the environment lose.
