welcome to nostr! this protocol is not "crypto based". it does have a large bitcoin user presence, however there is no direct need to use bitcoin just to use nostr. the two do have a beautiful symbiotic relationship though! i never used ssb, but there are a lot of old ssb users lurking around these parts.
