yeah i can conceive of how it can be made better but it requires simplifying the control model a lot
you get used to the idea of strafing with W/D and rotating with the mouse, the dimensions are all there but very often the game doesn't do it right, and i think, also, something else is that the sense of mouse up and down have to be reversed to really get the right feel with flying - you push up to mean lean down, as in "push up tail" and "pull down tail" this maps from mouse to joystick much better
these control systems have taken a long time to really get right... reminds me of when i go and try to play Railroad Tycoon 3 and omg that control interface is so weird
