#PennedPossibilities

I don't do scary very often, I'm very good at getting to myself with my own writing, and I am VERY good at scaring myself. There are no scary scenes in the current WIP, but I do have this little snippet from a writers group exercise ages ago. The prompt was 'smoke'

-----

The waiting was the worst. Locked in the cage, knowing what was to come. Knowing there was no escape. After a long time, there was a faint scent of smoke. Tiny wisps of it sneaking through the door.

No enough to make me cough. Far, far to little to bring unconsciousness. Damn it.

Then, slowly, heat began to penetrate the floor. I shifted my feet, instinctively trying to move away from the discomfort. But there was no where to go.

I was sweating, for what good it did. My feet burnt and blistered. I stood as long as I could, keeping my body away from the floor. The air itself was hot enough to burn - like a sunburn across my whole skin.

The pain was... beyond. Eventually I couldn't think, couldn't remember, just the pain, and screaming. And still it got hotter.

I stumbled, fell into the wall, my hands, my chest, my face, blistered and broke in a moment. I pushed myself away and fell to the floor, starting to glow a dull red... then, only pain.
