"Gračanica Monastery," Nadežda Petrović, 1913.
Petrović (1873-1915) was a Serbian painter, photographer, and nurse. The most important Serbian woman artist of the time, she experimented with Expressionism and Fauvism, as she does here. She was also a pioneering war photographer.
Between 1901 and 1912, she exhibited work all over Europe, winning acclaim and esteem. However, when the Balkan Wars broke out in 1912, she left painting to become a combat photographer and nurse; this canvas is one of the last she ever did.
She doubled down on nursing in WWI, but typhoid claimed her before the war was over.
Anyway, something to think about, and such a stirring image.
From the National Museum in Belgrade.
