Lorry drivers are “under attack” from organised crime gangs who are monitoring their journeys along motorways to steal high-value goods. Criminal networks have deep knowledge of supply chains and the routes haulage drivers follow when transporting electrical goods, alcohol, clothing and perfumes. Gangs operating in London, Coventry, Leeds, Essex and Liverpool are wise to police tactics but continue to “deliberately target” road freight. Investigators said that gangs will identify particular service stations and target drivers taking mandated rest stops. Last year there were 5,370 reports of HGV and cargo crime in the UK, with at least £68.3 million worth of goods stolen. Since 2020, the true value of loss is believed to be £1 billion.
