I do think there's a balance to be had between protecting people from unnecessary trauma and letting people develop skills to be able to deal with adversity in life.
Not enough protection, and people truly can get further screwed up by having to relive trauma. But too much, and people might not learn how to deal with distress at all. It can be a tricky balance.
