npub15xlf045s9sutk2chghqq5w6lfsmdkl2mymdtj825pxslfs3s74xqw7dj0q (npub15xl…dj0q) in my experience, money is far, far less likely to get involved when the license is GPL because of the more stringent requirements to share the source code of any software you ship, and most companies see that as a liability, especially if they are litigated to follow the terms set forth in the GPL license.
As you point out, the existence of RedHat shows that GPL isn't perfect at preventing corporate appropriation. But the BSD license, on the other hand, explicitly allows a corporation to use the source code for whatever purpose they choose without sharing the results or modifications they make to it. I think this is the more egregious exploitation of the labor of software engineers who write open source software.
The software must be free/libre, not just open source, or else you are basically giving corporations permission to exploit your work without ever paying you.
