On an 816 system like yours with the 24-bit bus, that would ease things up a lot.
But the VERA still has only 128k of VRAM - not enough to double-buffer a 640x480x8bpp or hold a few large tilesets. A few X16 devs were discussing that it'd be nice to have a 512K VERA or something, but of course that can't be ABI/API-compatible with the current VERA.
Have you thought about doing something like that?
