Hey Star Trek fans, there’s still a couple of days left in Black History Month 2024.
While there have been many reflections over the month about the franchise’s contributions to representation and inclusion, I’d like to encourage you take another step.
Looking beyond some of our favourite Trek actors’ performances in the franchise, many have also contributed to bringing Black history and experience to screen. LeVar Burton in Roots, Whoopi Goldberg in The Colour Purple among others.
One performance that may be less well known outside Canada is Dicovery’s Ronnie Rowe Jr’s principal role in The Porter. It’s a historical drama series about the 1920s movement for unionization of Black porters on North American passenger rail trains. It was a CBC/BET+ coproduction and is available through a variety of streamers outside the region.
