21. Tuesday after the III Sunday of Lent: Christ, the True Redeemer

Tuesday of the III Week of Lent

“you were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb unblemished and without spot” (1 Pet 1:19)

By the sin of our first parents, humankind separated itself from God, as St. Paul explains in the epistle to the Ephesians (chapter 2); man did not exclude himself from the power of God, but from the vision of His face, to which His children and family are admitted. Furthermore, we fell under the usurped power of the devil, to whom, by his consent, man submitted. Man delivered to him all that he was, although he could not give himself, for he was not master of himself and belonged to another.

The Passion of Christ, therefore, had two effects:

- It freed us from the power of the enemy, overcoming him with means contrary to those the enemy used in his victory over man: humility, obedience, and the austerity of penance, which opposes the delight of the forbidden fruit.

- Moreover, by satisfying for the faults of men, it united them to God and made them children and family of God.

This liberation therefore has a double character of redemption. While it freed us from the power of the devil, Christ redeemed us in the manner of a king who recovers by combat a kingdom occupied by an adversary. While appeasing God on our behalf, He redeemed us as if, rigorously satisfying for us, He paid a price for us to be freed from the penalty and from sin.

Now, the price of blood was not offered to the devil, but to God, in order to satisfy for us. And He snatched us from the devil by the victory of His Passion.

If the devil dominated us through an unjust usurpation, having fallen under his power after having been overcome by him was just. Therefore, it was necessary that he be defeated by means contrary to those by which the enemy overcame us, for he did not win by force, but by deceitfully inducing us to sin.

20. Monday after the Third Sunday of Lent: By the Passion we were freed from the power of the devil

Monday of the Third Week of Lent

The Lord said, at the imminent Passion: “Now will the prince of this world be cast out: and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself” (John 12:31). Now, the Lord was lifted up from the earth by the Passion of the cross. Therefore, by it, the devil was deprived of his power over men.

Regarding the power that the devil exercised over men before the Passion of Christ, we must make a threefold consideration:

1. The first, related to man, who by his sin deserved to be delivered to the power of the devil, by whose temptation he was overcome;

2. The second, related to God, whom man offended by sinning, and who in His justice abandoned man to the power of the devil.

3. The third relates to the devil, who with his most wicked will impeded man from attaining his salvation.

Thus, with regard to the first consideration, man was freed from the power of the devil by the Passion of Christ, because the Passion of Christ is the cause of the remission of sins.

As for the second, the Passion of Christ delivered us from the power of the devil, by reconciling us with God.

Concerning the third, the Passion of Christ liberated us from the devil, because in it the devil exceeded the measure of power that God had granted him, plotting the death of Christ, who did not deserve death since he had no sin. Hence Augustine says: “By the justice of Christ the devil was overcome, because although he found nothing in Him worthy of death, yet he killed Him. And thus it was just that the debtors whom he held in his power should be ordered free, believing in Christ, whom the devil killed, albeit He had no debt.”

It is true that the devil can still, with God's permission, tempt men in soul and torment their bodies; however, the remedy of the Passion of Christ is prepared for man, with which he can defend himself against the attacks of the enemy so as not to be dragged into the perdition of eternal death. And all those who, before the Passion, resisted the devil, were able to do so by faith in the Passion of Christ. Although, since this Passion had not yet been consummated, in a certain way no one could escape the hands of the devil, thus freeing himself from descending into hell; whereas after the Passion of Christ, we can all defend ourselves against the diabolical power.

God allows the devil to deceive certain people, at certain times and places, for a hidden reason of His judgments. But always, through the Passion of Christ, the remedy is prepared for men to defend themselves from the wickedness of demons, even in the time of the Antichrist. And the fact that certain people neglect to make use of this remedy in no way diminishes the efficacy of the Passion of Christ.
