one thing i recall about learning how to catch fish from my relatives (who had a sea-oriented lifestyle): you don't cut it up right away after catching it. you have to knock the fish out first. usually smacking its head against a nearby stone. i think that's when six-year-old me became aware that humans kill to eat.
