There has been much controversy around this sculpture of Constantin Brancusi. Some saw it as reproductive organ, some saw it as a telephone (or a walkie talkie), some saw it as a seed of life, others saw in it the receptive principle bowing it's head to divine forces. This is what he said:
"My statue, you understand, sir, is the woman, the very synthesis of the woman, Goethe's eternal feminine reduced to its essence. For five years I worked and simplified, I made matter say what cannot be said. And what is the woman in the end? A smile between lace and blush? This is not the woman! To release this entity, to bring into the realm of the sensible this eternal type of ephemeral forms, for five years I simplified, I retouched the work. And I think that, finally succeeding, I overcame matter. In fact, it's really a shame to spoil the beauty of a material by drilling small holes for eyes, (sculpting) hair, ears. And my matter is so beautiful through these sinuous lines, shining like pure gold and summarizing in one archetype all the feminine effigies on earth"
