Long term projects where the reward is not only uncertain, but months or years away, feel hopeless when you're far from the finish line.
At least they do to me, because I find it difficult to care about or believe in distant uncertain future outcomes.
A book I read emphasised the difference between "rational" and "reasonable". Many things are rational but unreasonable because you don't have the endurance for them.
