I remember many years ago I attended a conference in Sweden, and I was momentarily stymied by the first toilet I encountered there. I didn't see an obvious way to flush it. Took a closer inspection of the apparatus to realize that what I had initially thought was a decorative logo was actually a pull UP handle in the center top.
On a trip to Japan, I was momentarily surprised to see toilet tanks that doubled as sinks. When the toilet was flushed, the water would come up a pipe and flow out over the slightly sunken lid, and then through a small hole in the center down into the tank to fill it. I've never been sure if that was genius or nightmarish. Maybe both.
