I found Robert Heinlein and other scifi novels most educational.
In Heinlein's Farnham's Freehold, he describes how to make "ersatz dynamite" using innocuous household chemicals: tincture of iodine and washing ammonia. Described as being harmless when wet but when dry a feather landing on it will make it explode.
When I was much older I figured out that the blasted stuff was the insanely dangerous chemical nitrogen tri-iodide
